Background of the Study
Religious education has the potential to foster a culture of tolerance and understanding among students, particularly in diverse communities. In Jos South LGA, Plateau State, the impact of religious instruction on promoting acceptance of various religious beliefs is of paramount importance. Through the inclusion of interfaith perspectives and the study of diverse religious traditions, religious education can encourage students to appreciate differences rather than fear them (Eke, 2023). The curriculum often emphasizes universal values such as compassion, respect, and empathy, which serve as a foundation for tolerance. As students engage with religious texts and participate in discussions about faith, they develop a broader perspective that transcends sectarian boundaries (Olayinka, 2024). This educational approach not only nurtures individual moral development but also contributes to social cohesion in a multi-religious society. The diverse religious landscape of Jos South LGA presents both challenges and opportunities for educational institutions striving to promote interfaith harmony. Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of religious education in promoting tolerance, there remains a significant challenge in fostering genuine acceptance of diverse religious beliefs among students in Jos South LGA, Plateau State. Many students, while exposed to religious teachings, continue to harbor prejudices that manifest in discriminatory attitudes and behaviors. This problem is compounded by societal and cultural influences that reinforce narrow interpretations of faith, thereby undermining the efforts of educational institutions to promote inter-religious harmony (Okoro, 2023). The disconnect between the ideal of tolerance taught in religious classes and the actual behaviors observed in school settings raises concerns about the effectiveness of current educational approaches. Inadequate curricular content, limited exposure to multiple religious perspectives, and insufficient dialogue on interfaith issues contribute to the persistence of intolerance (Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, external factors such as media portrayals of religious conflict and historical animosities further complicate the development of tolerant attitudes among students (Emeka, 2025). The problem is further exacerbated by a lack of comprehensive research examining the direct impact of religious education on interfaith tolerance. Without a clear understanding of the mechanisms at play, interventions aimed at promoting tolerance remain fragmented and ineffective. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating how religious education influences students' tolerance towards different religious beliefs, thereby providing a basis for more effective educational strategies.

The research is confined to the selected student population and may not be representative of broader contexts. Methodological constraints such as sample size and self-report biases may also affect the results.
